iphone-guide-ebookThe iPhone is – if I may say so – one of the greatest mobile revolutions of the past decade. More and more, mobile phones seem to materialize out of our wildest dreams. Because of the tight integration of third-party applications, you can do nearly everything with your device — be it gaming, working, fooling around, and of course phoning. However, because of the sheer vastness of possibilities, not a lot of people are using their iPhone to the full extent of its capabilities. As of such, a lot of great features are missed on the users.

Download The Unofficial Guide to the iPhone both for the young and old, this guide comes highly recommended.

LiveStream offers Free Live Streaming Service to Iphone

Filed under: iPhone Applications, iPhone News — admin @ 9:45 am

Livestream, the leading live Internet video platform, today announced the immediate availability of its free service for streaming live to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Using Livestream Procaster, users can stream live from their webcam, video camera or even broadcast their PC or Mac desktop. Livestream producers can start streaming live to the addressable iPhone and iPod Touch audience over 3G or Wi-Fi connections, with less than five minutes of setup.

Livestream is the first to offer a turn-key streaming service that uses the new H.264 HTTP live streaming functionality included in the native QuickTime player that Apple has pre-installed on the iPhone. This means that Livestream producers do not need to obtain iPhone App Store approval to launch their own iPhone live streaming channel, nor do their viewers need to install any application. Streams are viewed using the iPhone’s Safari browser.

Livestream has also provided a simple Representational State Transfer (REST) API for developers to integrate live streaming into their own iPhone websites or their own iPhone applications. Livestream Procaster includes a free streaming encoder, which means that no third party application or license needs to be purchased in order to stream live to the iPhone using Livestream.

“A key breakthrough is that the service doesn’t require any proprietary player or application to be installed on the iPhone. Producers are free to integrate the iPhone live stream with their own website, iPhone portal or iPhone application using the API provided” explained Livestream CEO and co-founder Max Haot.

Streaming live to the iPhone requires less than five minutes to install. Producers simply download and install Livestream Procaster for the PC or Mac from www.livestream.com/procaster, connect their video camera or webcam, select iPhone 3G Quality, and press Go Live. User can view the live streams on their iPhone or iPod Touch by pointing their Safari browser to the channel they want to view at iphone.livestream.com.

Wikipedia for Iphone

Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia, has launched free software  for iPhones available at Apples online App Store.

“Everybody recognizes with the growth of mobile tools globally that this iswikipedia-iphonehow people access information,” foundation spokesman Jay Walsh told AFP on Wednesday.

“Our mission is to spread free knowledge; we want to do everything we can to meet and embrace that audience.”

“Our intention is to house the source code and continue to update the application through Apple channels with subsequent releases,” Walsh said.

“Then, obviously, take it to other platforms like Palm and Android. We want to take the same tool and make it work in other spaces.”

Wikipedia can be reached using Web browsers in iPhones and other Internet-linked mobile devices, but the pages are scaled-down versions of what is accessible using desktop computers. However, users can use  iphones to edit entries and upload pictures or other digital content to the website.

The Wikipedia application for iPhones is an open-source, first version that the foundation hopes to incrementally upgrade with input from software savants worldwide, according to Walsh.

“In a perfect world you would be able to do everything on a mobile you could do on a personal computer,” Walsh said of using Wikipedia on smart phones.

“It is a platform we are going to build on. The sky is the limit; we can do whatever we want.”

Apple has officially announced the new iPhone 3GS.  The iPhone 3G S uses the same exterior design as the 3G but is able to load apps up to three times faster, and render websites three times faster.

OpenGL ES 2.0 rendering is present for games, and the phone’s HSDPA reception is now rated at 7.2Mbps instead of 3.6Mbps. A new three-megapixel camera with autofocus is present, as well as video capture. Video captured feature is rated at 30fps in 640×480 resolution with audio. Videos can be shared via e-mail, MMS, MobileMe and YouTube.

In addition, the new iPhone will allow users to download movies and TV shows directly, without first having to download them onto a computer. The iPhone 3G salso permits streaming, allowing users to “rent” movies wherever wi-fi service is available.

Other features include a magnetometer with a compass app, and hardware support for Nike+, as well as data encryption and iTunes backups. Battery life has been raised to nine hours for Wi-Fi, 10 hours for video, 30 for music, 12 hours for GSM calling and 5 hours for 3G data. A new voice-dialing function is enabled by holding the Home button, which pops up the voice control and enables “call” or “dial” commands. The control scheme can also be used to play iPod audio, by speaking an artist or playlist name, or saying “play more songs like this”.  Asking “what’s playing now” will read out current track info.

A 16GB model will cost $199, while a 32GB phone will be $299. Black and white colors will be options for each; the iPhone 3G is expected to remain available in 8GB form for $99.

Okimok – Stream photos from your iPhone

Filed under: Free iPhone Software, iPhone Applications — admin @ 10:16 pm

bookmark bookmark bookmark bookmark bookmark bookmark bookmark bookmark bookmark bookmark

Okimok is a free social network platform that allows users to instantly share their photos with friends by using a superdeluxe slideshow.

A photo says more than a thousand words, but a photo stream tells you a whole story. This is why okimok is a web platform with a photo stream and not a single page view per photo. Okimok claims to be dedicated and simple and that is exactly what we found it to be.
The platform is based on the idea that people would like to see what is going on anywhere, anytime. They want to share these little photo moments with their audience, while being part of another’s audience as well.

Three types of photo streams are available on the platform. First, there is your solo stream displaying the last 15pictures that you made. Next, a combo stream showing the last 30 pictures of the users that you are following. And on the homepage, there is a world stream that shows all pictures made by the entire okimok community.

The app can be found in the Apple App Store and is for free. -download Okimok-

After installing and opening the app, the first thing you do is create a new account. The developers have well thought over the sign up process since you can do everything from the iPhone application itself. After signing up, the main screen appears. The application is nice and simple. Three buttons do the work, “take photo”, “pick photo” and “go okimok.com”.

The first two buttons let you upload a picture, either by taking a new one or picking one from the camera roll. Next, a preview screen is shown with the possibility to add a title that is displayed in the slideshow. The time to

upload a picture is surprisingly short, but that is also due to the fact that the photos are downsized before they get uploaded. The original photos that you upload are stored on your camera roll as well.
The “go okimok.com” button appears to open a safari browser with your combo stream in it. In our opinion it is not very neat to open the safari browser, but the developers of okimok assure that in an upcoming version the iPhone application will be extended to show photo streams inside the app.

The web platform has a lovely design. After signing in, you are brought to your combo stream. In your overview you can see who is following you and who you are following. Like Twitter, only for photos instead of text.It is also possible to change user settings on the web platform. There’s also a Twitter link in the settings menu. When entering your Twitter account details, an update is sent to your Twitter stream everytimeyou upload a new picture. The update consists of a link to your solo stream and not to a specific photo.
